You could call up another CPA with good references tell them your situation and ask to pose your questions.

That'll help you narrow your focus - buy a rental (small or large) versus invest in pool of money as you called it - which I assume you're referring to syndication.

Its not as well known as other deferral strategies, but there are lots of references and lawyers who can provide advice on it.

The easiest solution is to wait to buy, move down and rent, establish the new job and then buy but I'm wondering if there is a work around so the timing is a little smoother/I don't have to move into a temporary rental. 

But this may be a long term solution.
