Yes, running an AC when it is below 60d can cause damage to the coils and cause the lubricating oil to thicken too much.

We have the AC company come out every 6 months for maintenance; I already talked to them about cleaning out the coils the next time they're out which is in another 2 months or so.

Since they are taxing the old freon to death 15% wouldn't have changed the math much, we ended up replacing the air conditioner caused by a leak at the A-coil.

This sounds like a coil issue.

And I like plain white, coil top and you can even replace the drip bowls after long tenancies to make them look like new again...
