I would also consider adding a wood mantel and then painting the brick either above or below the mantel to match the white paint around it to make it a focal point without washing out the entire fireplace.

I have a couple of duplexes with that problem in that one side is neat and the other side leaves food out, never washes dishes, etc.What I also like to do is get a big bag of (I forget what kind) poison powder that I ring the outside of the unit with like a moat.

Kind of messes up the books when double rent is shown for that month and none when it is applied the last month but it all comes out in the wash!
