Current home value is based on an automated valuation model (AVM), whereas assessed value comes from the county, and is their estimate of the homes value.AVM's, like the Zillow Zestimate, can be great in areas where there are lots of home sales, and the homes themselves are truly similar (a large subdivision with active turnover), and can be terrible in other areas - for example in states with non-disclosure laws on the details of recent home sales, or in areas where homes vary a lot in quality, view, etc.The quality of county assessor values also vary a lot.
