Have enough that after you buy the property you still have 6 months of expenses in reserves that you can use for daily living.

Virtually everyone lives somewhere especially true for those that pay taxes (in CA property and income tax).  

My dream is to achieve financial freedom through multifamily rental properties and live life on my own terms.Recently, I have been reading one book after another, trying to absorb as much information as possible, and am extremely thankful to finally find this amazing community.

You may also want to consider purchasing multi-unit properties and live in one of the units.

Thank you Eric.In addition to the rental properties, my wife and I have a paid off house, paid off car, and about $1.4m in retirement accounts, brokerages, and savings.We live in a HCOL area and our expenses are $9.5k per month even though we live pretty modestly.I set out initially to have real estate pay for at least some of my expenses in order to give me more freedom and financial security.Is your wife quitting too? 

a lot of people will poo poo this, but I also live in a market where cash flow is low, property taxes are high and properties are expensive (which is a relative term).
