This is all preliminary thinking (pre number crouching) and so I am wondering if anyone has used any other method of getting an idea for rent (outside of actually asking for the rents)?

In some places there are 'livability' code issues that are also posted online.A standard part of our preliminary market research is to determine what information can be found online at which website.

Sounds like an interesting idea but I use the meeting as a preliminary view into their lives.  

Houses in this area do well, if they're updated and have curb appeal.I've done some preliminary searches for the owner and believe I've found them.

Currently I am just doing my preliminary research to get an idea of if real estate investing really is for me.

On the other hand, an experienced investor, especially one I have worked with before may need only give me general details of offers they are making to get my preliminary approval before their offers are accepted.      

My preliminary idea consists of two of these: Shelter-Kit Barn House, around 750 sq. ft. each (two bedroom), on about an acre of property.

From my preliminary research, I believe the construction type (slab on grade with concrete block walls) should be permittable, and the set-backs also seem to comply.
