Earned income will come with SE taxes, but contributions to the plan will defer income taxes.Another consideration to make are the likely returns that you can get within the plan when compared to the returns you're getting currently investing outside the plan.

SE Wisconsin is doing great and we have been seeing both healthy appreciation and lots of new development, while we are still short on inventory.

I never would have predicted SE Wisconsin to be the next tech hub, but analysts have already started calling this Wisconn Valley with the impact Foxconn will have and the venture capital they are pumping into this area.

Making S-corp. election would be different story, actually it could reduce your tax liability since you won't have to pay SE tax on the entire earnings but only on reasonable salary corp. will pay to you.Contributions to 401K can only be made with earned income, so if there is no income - you won't be able to contribute. 

I agree with Jason, but you might be paying SE taxes on top of ordinary taxes as ordinary income( not short term capital gains).
