You are talking about wall tiles here - I would have to see a picture, but I can't figure out in my head how you would have trimmed that out without it looking like crap or how it would meet surfaces properly, i.e. sink, etc.

It's a smooth surface (made to varying heights) that you lay before these thin resilient flooring styles that was most likely laid to raise that level of flooring up to the same height as your living room floor... you'll probably have better luck removing that layer with the linoleum intact on top.

We had one of those situations recently and it was easier to just rock over the popcorn - plus you get a nice clean surface for flat or knockdown finish.
