However, I'd be surprised if you weren't able to make house hacking a duplex work numbers-wise in medium-sized markets and larger, especially if you are willing to set up the vacant side as an STR in a travel market with reasonable STR regulations.

I would just have all my STR'S in country and use that money to travel to where I wanted to go.The only way I would consider it is if the returns were way higher than a U.S. location.But that's just me.

So if you want to profit $200/mth per property, and you want to live off of just that income, and lets say you can live off on $50k/year (which won't make you a world traveler), then you are looking at 20+ properties.
