Yes, STR is more work however that's what the OP wants.

With $50k, the op has the buying power on an owner occupied property for over $1.5 million.

That was kind of the big point of my OP, I guess I wasn't super clear on that. :)

If I was in the OPs situation with such a high tax bill, I would also be looking to use strategies like cost seg to save 6 figures in taxes, and use that money to buy more income producing property.
