If you want more like traditional style, you can overbuild roof framing.In anyway, you may want to consult a licensed architect (like me :-) and/or structural engineer in your area.  

That is why hiring a good Architect (full disclosure, I'm an Architect) with detailed plans is the best way to go.

In Florida, you don't need to be a licensed architect to submit your own plans.

I do lots of renovations but avoid historical projects because my focus is income and they take a lot of love...that said there are architects who really know the process and who to help you through.

I believe council must be an attorney but you may be able to have an architect or other representative.
