As Bourdain points out, until there is the infrastructure to support the people who will live in these fixer uppers, grocery stores, gas stations, dry cleaners, etc, its really not worth rehabbing them for your own retirement.

Old, small town developers that are retired are rarely motivated, but the day will come. :)
