During the prepurchase inspection I noticed the battery low message on the thermostat.

We do it self-managing and preventing disasters like frozen pipes, break-ins, crappy tenant placements and your calling 3 different Maytag Man to flip a breaker, turn up a fridge thermostat and hand-tighten a trap nut. 

Where is the thermostat that controls the temperature?

I think that you will be easy access to them for them to let you know what is wrong with the unit and they will want you to do things that normal tenants would do themselves such as replace a light bulb, readjust their cable antena, or adjust the thermostat on the refrigerator. 

We walk through the unit with our move-in checklist and showing the tenant how things work (thermostat, water shut offs, breakers, etc.

Mine can set door codes, message (or call) guests, schedule cleaners, adjust the thermostat, monitor my cameras, & call a plumber just as easily as a local PM can, for 1% of the cost.Hire good cleaners, a solid handyman & befriend some helpful neighbors.
