Renting is the most economical accommodation and will allow you maximum savings that would other wise be gobbled up by a personal home.

So, as long as you HAVE to pay for a roof over your head, why not make it one that you own, and has the abilty to appreciate to accommodate for those expenses you mention like roof, HVAC, etc...?

I had to change accommodation during that time and I was working for cash.

Also, I run STRs so it’s better to reveal I’m the owner so I can accommodate my guests as best I can.

I'm a fan of airbnb, btw, having used it to book great accommodations, and my daughter has rented her apt. in Berkeley successfully and profitably dozens of times.The rental scamming/squatting thing seems more and more prevalent these past few years.  

You now have to take the first tenant that knocks on the door or be sued by the city, they have imposed a "rich man's tax on people who are successful", if you solicit someone who is in foreclosure or *thinks* they may end up in foreclosure it is a "criminal act" and you could find yourself in court, they have reduced the number of automobile lanes to accommodate having more bicycle lanes (Seattle is *hills*, do you know how long it takes a bicycle to climb 1st hill in the rain in friday night traffic?

When planning new development, localities should consider promoting this instead of constantly approving more single family detached with large yards further and further out, destroying agricultural areas and filling in wetlands just to accommodate more people.
