Do I need to send them a letter that I will be keeping the last month rent security deposit since they abandoned the property in the middle of the lease.

Planned on treating it as an abandonment since I have not been able to get in contact with anyone either former tenants or current.Thanks!

@Bob Burke one lesson that is hard to earn is that a vacant abandoned property isn't always a deal.

These abandoned duplexes are in an area that the property values are slowly climbing up but these homeowners are thousands behind on taxes, absentee owners, and the homes are paid for, but they will need face lifts and have been boarded up by the city.

But if it is obviously abandoned, say so in the letter.

I just saw an ad in the newspaper that a local town is selling a house which it appears the previous owner abandoned/didn't pay taxes on (no specifics listed other than needs a new roof).
