@Michael Johnson, I've not used a mentor for REI, but a mentor is definitely worth the money... assuming it's the right person and someone you truly admire and trust.I look at it this way... spend 10 years developing the experience, or pay someone for their decade or more of experience so you can take advantage of the shortcut.

While I admire your goal of paying it forward and showing other young men, you can't do that until you've done it for yourself.

I do think that you need to build a relationship with someone you admire before bringing up a mentorship. 

It was very well constructed by the builders and I admired the facility workers.
