It's enough to ruin your year.

Radon is an odorless gas that, in high concentrations, can cause cancer.

The house is in ruins and the 95 year old owner is nowhere to be seen and I somehow doubt he filed for bankruptcy.

Mom got brain cancer and I need to be close to her, a job relocation, my kid got injured and is now permanently in a wheelchair and the old house isn't wheelchair friendly, old house burned down, etc, are what we're looking for.The other alternative, depending on how much it'll cost you, etc, would be to refinance the duplex into investment property financing with a closing concurrent to the FHA purchase closing.

While you can never fully eliminate risk, you can reduce it by employing a strategy whereby you at least identify and befriend those relatives or other who might lay claim and ruin your day.

Each street is unique, and it only takes 1 or 2 poorly managed multis on a particular street to ruin the quality of life for everyone else.  

Very  very few on Section 8 get caught up because they don't have the ability to get a 2nd job (it would ruin their housing voucher) and they don't the same fiscal resources.That all being said I'm sure our experiences vary based on the how the state runs the program.
