I'm also a little confused as to how the 2 LLCs would be connected....So, if you have an LLC that's owned by another LLC (parent umbrella LLC), does that mean you have to register as a foreign entity?

Cases like the 16.6 Million Dollar Chicago Fatal Porch Collapse of 2003 were 13 people died and 57 more were injured that took ten years to litigate...I can't find enough facts from articles online to really know how the owner was only out $660,000 when it doesn't appear to be in any kind of corporate structure that provides liability protection, and he owned 20-30 other buildings at the time....it appears he simply had a boatload of umbrella insurance but I can't tell anything for sure.

Insurance would cover it, I would pay the deductible, and no assets would be lost.If you are in an area like San Diego where people are more likely to sue, a judge is more likely to find you guilty, and the payout is likely to be higher, then you may consider an umbrella insurance policy.
