When you are partnering with someone else, title in a seperate entity protects your interest in the property against liens lodged against your partner as a result of his outside pursuits or personal blunders.

Would you compensate them for lodging? 

Actually the project is even bigger in scope.Problem - roof and ceiling leaks in two units, drywood termite infestation in two units, very likely the two issues are related, roof leaks caused wood rot, wood rot might have attracted the termites etc...There is also evidence of subterranean termites.So the order of work:(1) Subterranean termite treatment - perimeter trench and concrete slab drilling with termidor application.(2) Roof demolition down to sheathing.(3) Repair rotted wood deck and wood joists.(4) New roofing membrane and flashing work.(5) New fascia and new drip edges.(6) Tenants leave for 3 days.(7) Drywood termite fumigation.(8) Tenants move back in.One pest control company will deal with the subterranean termite treatment.Another pest control company for the tenting and fumigation.One roofing company for all roof work and wood repair.One painting company for fascia painting.Plus reimbursement to tenants for loss of use (rent credit), lodging, food etc...I assume tenant reimbursement and termite treatments are expenses? 

Then I received an SMS from a different lawyer to say that my transfer on a different unit had been lodged at the deeds office.

I expect they are the usual uses permitted in a residential area: child care center, clubs/lodge, community care center, library, religious assembly.

I think they are great for summer homes in the mountains, hunting lodges, or a place behind your business to get a shower, eat and take a nap.I just don't see living in one.

As a matter of fact, our property manager handled all of the setup of the vacation rental, from registering the business name with the state, setting up to collect and submit sales and lodging tax, informs us of any changes in the laws, etc.

Even larger beach towns like Ocean City, MD have seen new lodging and condominium starts slow.The explosion in hotel capacity and visits to NYC, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Miami indicates to me that these urban areas may not only be stealing population from exurban and rural areas but also be a serious threat to some of the small town vacation destinations throughout the country.
