As far as your SFH strategy goes, not sure what the job market is like in South Jersey, but I know in Central Jersey there are a lot of NY commuters, so renting will always be easier.

@Mitch Davidson regarding your comment on distance from Chimney Rock its about 18 - 20 mins west of it driving, about 8 miles.

It's a very nice area as I live nearby and within a reasonably short distance, there are expensive homes that are very nice, , but also some that are small. 

My plan is to utilize the 5% down payment available through conventional loans.I would essentially mega-commute for the first year or two, working about 10-day stretches and then having equal time off, using my PTO strategically to gain more time off.
