During the winter, we had a problem with ice damming at the front of the house.

I've been told appreciation is always icing on the cake, with "the cake" being a good buy.

I am from Canada and we do things a little bit different on our igloos up here but typically when I get the ice patch done come spring melt I trade a few really good fish that I get from the Inuits to our local builder!

Typically the issue we run into with old homes as it relates to roofs are ice dam issues.  

If you give some more details, I (and many others on BP, I'm sure) would be happy to do some analysis for you.As far as appreciation goes; conventional wisdom on BP tells you to ignore it and just consider it icing on the cake, but I mildly disagree.

the cost of repair service is astronomical (twice the cost of utah)...now maybe my tenants are getting taken but 400 to fix a gas fireplace, 400 to fix an ice maker in the fridge...the list goes on and on.  

I am 20 years old and most of the members are above 40, I have good standing with them but feel a little uncomfortable breaking the ice in terms of talking money.

I don't know because I've never done it, but it seems when everything is going the H-E double hockey sticks in a hand basket is the best time to get in and get in for cheap.
