Should I do anything to this fireplace?

I'd recommend staying away from houses with fireplaces or at least plan for a new source of heat.

@Lyle Cooper The thing that I noticed that might make the space feel less dark is white washing the brick wall and the fireplace. 

The focal point there is an old stone fireplace which we just had sandblasted today.  100 years of crud and soot is now gone, but the stones look faded.I'm guessing that there's some sort of coating we could apply to bring back the original color in the granite, but I don't know what that would be.Any ideas?  

Back in RI when I would access a property on the county assessors office it would include the features of the house (number of bed/bath/rooms/fireplace/etc).

Floor leveler said that they built the houses in that time/area with the floor by the fireplace being higher than the floor at the outside edge of the house.
