Like @Cara Lonsdale, I would insist on some type of resolution prior to even considering moving forward.

It was enough to buy my first car (a nice used Volvo), send me to college, and have money left over to put towards a house "someday."

I can run to Home Depot, and log the expense in my car as soon as I leave, so if I lose the receipt, it doesn't matter, because it is saved with my entry.

The above response fits with anything you buy from an investment property to a new suit to a car.  A
