Brian, I once lived in a condo and rented the one right next door with no problems or issues, slightly different context than sf and actually shared a wall even...But I do know many people who even live closer with accessory (or in-law) apts and make it work.

Based on the zoning you will find out if a MIL or Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is allowable.
