@Sigurd Panke You can wait until April 2021 to pay the tax as long as you have paid in the minimum amount of tax to avoid an underpayment penalty.

(Not to say this is one of those)Option 2, sell the home on the open market, downsize them to a new home and so long as the net proceeds “profit” is less than $500k for a married couple, there is no capital gains tax as they have personal residence exemption.
