Situations are highly dependent on your background, network, and your strengths/weaknesses.

My husband retired after 40 years as a case manager for the chronic mentally ill. 

They valued comfort more than I did, and that was their weakness.

It is not a weakness unless you try and become a landlord.There are plenty of investors who make a lot of money by developing a team of support- namely a property manager that they trust.

My friends that share my chronic health conditions won't consider becoming a landlord, I can understand not having the funding but the ones that are still working should seriously look into it.

If you can manage it because properties are cheap in your area and you have the necessary construction and renovation experience to evaluate the home's structural strengths and weaknesses yourself, you should definitely do it and leverage your experience.

Now if you have a plumbing defect (say  weak flushing toilet) then I would fix the problem not the effects of it. 

Let the weak make bad decisions and the wise flourish.
