As long as you're purchasing an actual deeded interest in the property itself.What won't work is if you are wanting to purchase membership interest in or shares of a partnership that owns a building - like most syndications.

My personal favorite structure is property owned by a trust; beneficial interest in the trust held by multi and/or single member LLC's; then you can get real creative on who owns the membership in the LLC's.

In the state of MD, if a property sits inside an LLC on its own and the buyer buys the membership of the LLC instead of buying the property directly, there is no recordation tax.
