read on a flooring forum somewhere that a guy puts Tyvek house wrap on top of the hardwood and below the carpet padding. this way, if a pet pees, it would never hit the hardwood floor.i had a chance to do it on the newest house, but the carpet guy said it would be "overkill, since you have the best pad already". but i will do it from now on just for the extra protection.

cats seem to be much worse than dogs, and the longer the urine sits, the more damage it does.I would expect you'll have to replace the carpets, pads, and probably a good bit of subfloor.
