Use updated hardware.  

As a project manager, I worked on site (painting, installing hardware, fetching materials) in addition to selecting and paying licensed tradesmen to improve the property with the direct knowledge and consent of the deed owners.

As for doors there are options as well, call your local door hardware supply house and they can help you. 

They'll bust up the windows, floors, and kitchen and bath hardware.  

Why pay the carpenter $80 an hour to drive to the store... sometimes I have to make them haul back the split/wet boards if they aren't careful choosing though.Some of the other smaller hardware suppliers (Talbert is an example) give you a rebate at the end of the year or other prizes like airplane tickets, etc.  

If you want a real adventure....Go to hardware stores and ask for contractor recommendations.

Don't let the contents of your wallet define your future.

If I'm doing floors, countertops, painting (int and ext), installing cabinet hardware and etc then I buy all the materials for those specific tasks and I get the green light when to get those tasks completed ASAP.  

Less time you spend having to come fix stuff down the road the better off you will be in the wallet and also have more time to fish or hit the beach.
