You need some sort of edge or border to contain the backsplash where it belongs.If you are using a ceramic or porcelain tile you should be able to get a pencil edge in the same product line.If you are using a glass or mosaic tile the only option often is aluminum edge trim which any tile store has to offer.

Or when you've got good friends or co workers that time and time again buy a brand new $300k+ single family house to live in on $50k to $60k a year salary, and they show you the house with big smiles asking your opinion on what they should do with all the landscaping or what types of ridiculously expensive art pieces they should buy, or how they want to rip up the brand new porcelain tiles because "the wifey wants new travertine in the brand spankin new house" and all you can do is think about the incredibly terrible "investment" they just made was as I drive off in my 1997 Toyota Tacoma with $270k miles on it, but financially sound.

Just went to inspect some work and noticed they weren't using thinset to lay down the cement board under porcelain tile.When I asked the contractor, he asked his flooring guy who had been doing tile for 25 years and "never puts thinset under cement board".Our agreement was to put down cement board and tile.Nothing was specifically said about thinset.
