OP's appreciation strategy pales in comparison, imho.

Thank you for sharing and reminding us that most of our 'problems' pale in comparison to surviving what you did.  

But that selection pales in comparison to the nearly 25,000foreclosures up for sale at auction in ten states, California, Florida, New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, Arizona and Washington.It’s like Ebay for real estate investors… but it’s all real estate, all the time.

And we're not talking pale shades here, I mean primary colors.  

All other expenses pale in comparison when you have no tenant and the unit is costing you money every month (even if it's free and clear because you still need to pay taxes, insurance and some utilities specially in the winter).
