If you're looking in/around Newark you may also be interested in East Orange (generally quite inexpensive, but suffering from some of the same safety issues that parts of Newark deal with), Orange, Hillside, and, if your price point is somewhat higher, Bloomfield.I'd suggest simply driving around these areas, block-by-block, to get a sense of the neighborhoods.
