I would like to add some additional spin on this topic. 

Until you've proven you can successfully do it you'll probably be spinning your wheels trying to raise funds.

Is the outside structure damage from water , dry rot, or whatever.

@Nathan Faucett, while you are developing trust, there is no reason for it to be seen as "I don't trust you", especially if you spin it in the context of: "hey I have have been watching you work on these and I am truly impressed with how you are handling the process.

Or maybe even disclose my status and spin it as a positive to save money on commissions or similar.

@Mike Jacovelli while I'm sure that can be discouraging, it might also be a good thing...as long as what you are receiving in genuine concern...People tend to discourage you when they feel like it is protecting you, so maybe spin it around this way: 1) When they voice concerns about the information you're giving them, you can either dismiss it and change the subject (if they are being negative). 2) Do they have any specific concerns that you should actually consider as relevant?

@Richard Kelly easy way to tell if they are functional: go to the property one day when the sun is out, look at the electric meter, watch it for a few minutes and see if it is spinning backwards!

Learn to spin questions.

This may sound silly if you've just started investing and don't own any stocks as it will take a large portfolio to spin off enough dividend income to replace a typical salary, but something to think about anyway and perhaps work towards in the future even if not relevant to your current situation.10.
