@James Lindsey, if "house-hacking" gives you the opportunity for FREE accommodation, then as long as the income from the other units covers your loan and maintenance/vacancy expenses, then your cash flow could still be seen as the amount you would otherwise be paying for rent (plus any surplus if any).

I'm see you are suggesting 50% might not accommodate the vacancy trend for a certain building or area (along with all the other expenses) and allocating more than 10% might be a good idea.
