I just had my the 30th birthday, which I wasn't particularly fond of (although my 40 something friends show me no sympathy whatsoever).

You have my sympathy!  

I am not going to splash sympathy there.

I'm giving them my sympathy and encouraging them to find a place where they would like better, and I'd be willing to terminate the lease early.

Owner settled the lawsuit, rather than risk a sympathy award.  

Now mind his house is in far better repair then the owner occupied one she had to call on but there was a huge amount of sympathy for that homeowner (he must have an illness) and I think contempt for the landlord.

I think that’s a healthy balance between sympathy and not too much.

I realize my two options are to get him to let me clean up or to sell the damn cabin but I thought I'd post here for at least some sympathy as the wife and I have had enough even after just one moth. 

I have no sympathy for these people because they are flat out shallow.
