Yes it's more simplistic and less control over comfort but simplicity has the ability to save you on repairs someday. they do make thermostat systems that have the capability of averaging the temps across floors and rooms. 

@Jacques Herve things just sound easy and simplistic when talking about stuff but renting rooms is complicated, convoluted and can be dangerous.
