My rentals are class B neighborhood type homes and small apartments.I'm pretty ignorant to the whole smart home product line, a programmable thermostat and remote garage door opener is the fanciest I've used.

Thermostats, thermocouples, the common furnace control board, furnace filters.

Ontraport is what I use.Some of the tools expect you to be a programmer or hire it out.

My PMs can set door codes, message (or call) guests, schedule cleaners, adjust the thermostat, monitor my cameras, & call a plumber just as easily as a local PM can, for 1% of the cost.Hire good cleaners, a solid handyman & befriend some helpful neighbors.

For the basement apartment's comfort as they can't control their own heat, we got a wireless ecobee thermostat that has wireless sensors.  

There's nothing more frustrating to me than going into a unit I'm paying for heat in and seeing the thermostat cranked to *80, windows open and it's *20 outside. 

Now if anyone has access to the thermostat here in Chicago can you please turn it up a few degrees?

. :)   We are definitely feeling it up here in fact we had an investor friend come home to frozen pipes & a lot of damage yet the thermostat was set at 72.
