@Scott Cornelle, not sure what you've read yet, but a big book for many on here was Rich Dad Poor Dad, and for me personally I love The One Thing by Gary Keller and The Millionaire Next Door.

The general things I have seen is ones with good training courses and better assistance will take a good percentage of the split such as Keller Williams.If you know how to do all the basics in a real estate transaction or how to market yourself etc... then there are brokerages out there that charge a small monthly fee and per transaction fee and let you keep 100%.

Many give up, make excuses, procrastinate, lose focus (Read:  The One Thing, by Gary Keller), in fact, most fall short or fail.

I am with Mike, in that I highly recommend "The Millionaire Real Estate Investor" by Gary Keller.

Or the Keller Williams books. 

I have most of my Cleveland area rentals insured by Foremost, through Keller National in Cleveland Hts.

I suggest reading the Millionaire Real Estate Agent by Gary Keller (whether or not you want to be with KW, its a great book on the fundamentals of building an agent business).
