If you put it towards the loan, all you are doing is trapping it in the equity, requiring you to do work and spend money to take it back out.

I'd just go to home depot and buy the $40 termite and insect (carpenter ant) spray, go around the foundation spraying everywhere I could.  

here in Maryland if you disassemble a trap , the answer is yes .
