The extension would go over an existing extension that already exist downstairs.also part of the upstairs (about 300 sqft) has a very low ceiling; I think it is an add on to the original house.

Carl,I'll add one more observation, assuming you are interested in passive investing, crowd funding is one way to do it but don't overlook syndication and direct relationship you can get w/a deal sponsor and the learning that can provide you to be a better investor going forward.

@Cary PlotkinI know we are half-a-world-away with respect to many things financial and regulator in real estate, but here, I've only hear of asbestos abatement being covered if the property was represented (in writing) to as being asbestos free a the time of purchase ... and then, it would be covered under your title insurance (most likely an optional add-on).
