You can get solid surface tub surrounds at Lowes or Home Depot.

So those old thumb tacks could be placed on a flat surface so that their point was straight up (push-pin tacks don't really allow for that).

Again, these are complete painting jobs though, every single surface, even ceilings sometimes.

Not so fond of laminate or hardwood on concrete sub-floor surfaces; Mike Holmes had an episode on wood on concrete sub-floors that showed lots of issues.

That cream layer does a incredible job sometimes sealing off the surface.
