We have finally accepted that the only way we're going to get reasonably good food in our area for a reasonable price is to cook it ourselves, after years of trying new restaurants and being disappointed.

There’s nothing down that road but disappointment. 

Much to our family's disappointment we were crazy enough to do the proverbial blood sweat & tears of REI for 35+ years...we only did the traditional IRA/401(k) solo's etc for tax deductibility & reinvestment purposes.

If you don't have these I understand your parents concern.Its common to not get family support whether its real estate, school, career, etc..but don't let it discourage or disappoint you.

I'd go so far as to say I was disappointed in it.  

It was very disappointing that the wholesaler had not been upfront with us from the beginning.

Real estate can create A LOT of emotions, including anger, frustration,  stress, fear, anxiety, disappointment, excitement-- and  while I might be in the minority here, I'd say yes it can bring  happiness (along with everything else, you don't get it by itself!).     

We are real disappointed with the services we received recently from Lima One here in Greenville, South Carolina.

If you think you will find cultural diversity and food etc of the kind you have in Vancouver anywhere outside the major coastal cities you will be sorely disappointed.
