Based on the zoning you will find out if a MIL or Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is allowable.

With regards to finding something that would be workable for you and them, have you thought about finding a property with a detached garage, putting in an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), and then renting out the front house to your parents, and the back house to another person?

Hi,So my friend is building a ~600 sq foot ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) in their backyard to be rented out as a "private residence" (think of it like a 1 bedroom studio/apartment with its own living space/bedroom/bathroom.

What my wife and I ended up doing is remodeling the house with an addition and converted the garage into an Accessory Dwelling Unit (permitted and rentalble guest house with separate address and electrical meter).
