If you did want to cut it down, ask her if she's willing to pay for half (as she insists it is on the property line) and see what she says then.

Otherwise, If you can't do that, and that owning in fact does beat renting from an economic standpoint, then it's very hard for someone to argue that your house isn't an asset if it is the sole reason that you are able to achieve the best possible economic outcome when it comes to providing yourself with shelter.People that insist something MUST generate cashflow to be an asset crack me up.
