Registering" rental properties (even SFH) for a fee and charging a fee for inspecting (somebody from the code compliance office) so they can walk the property and charge $150 for 10 minutes.I would call this a tax.As a property manager, once I get through the crap of the registration it actually makes my job easier, because I can tell a landlord who is reluctant to spend on repairs that the city insists.....

Otherwise, If you can't do that, and that owning in fact does beat renting from an economic standpoint, then it's very hard for someone to argue that your house isn't an asset if it is the sole reason that you are able to achieve the best possible economic outcome when it comes to providing yourself with shelter.People that insist something MUST generate cashflow to be an asset crack me up.

The property is exposed for auction once, and then the lawyers who brought the property go back to the judge and insist that they'll never be able to sell it for the amount of the back taxes.

We have a friend (who just sold their restored farmhouse on 30 acres) who had to dig out & install a retaining (fiber-cloth covered) trench for $4500 that has absolutely no function except it's NOW code for all septics systems.The sale triggered the town insisting on the upgrade.
