I took all the base molding off and ran the HW out to the edges (leaving room for expansion) and then reinstalled the base and then added a shoe molding (I didn't need it, but like the look).

You also may be able to take the bricks out that are misplaced and re-install them .

The kicker is though, the gas company requires a permit from the city stating that the gas line has been checked and is safe to reinstall the meter.

You will need proper fire blocks between units, which depending on what's on the connecting wall (like a custom shower, kitchen cabinets etc.) can be pricey to tear out down to the studs, install the fireblock, and reinstall what was originally there.

I did the same thing all over again (removing it, unlocking with screwdriver, reinstalling it) but it kept getting stuck.
