The general concern here is trying to modify for the romance of modifying, the idea you tried to do the right thing.

Is it the freedom, the romance, the high-risk high-reward proposition?

I have had a long romance with REI, and have finally decided to jump in.

But quickly got wind it was the first feelers of a romance scam, ie "from Houston, but overseas", "so lonely", "looking for friends". 

It's a pretty fast way to strip the romance out of the relationship.
