My wife and I are tied to this area due to being in proximity to family and we currently enjoy a farming/hobby farm lifestyle that is a big part of our family culture.

I own a small multifamily commercial in Albuquerque and can confirm the diversity of the economic and cultural factors that you mentioned. 

She immigrated from Serbia, so maybe that is a cultural difference, but my wife was pretty floored. 

If they can make a decent living, they won't want to leave their families or go where their food, culture, and language don't exist.What is the impact to REI? 

After awhile the cultural differences become pretty overwhelming.

Not sure if this will go against the culture here but if I read correctly and you are considering tying up your primary residence to an investment property please reconsider leveraging the home your family lives in.
