Of the very little I know on this subject, I think the biggest thing is that you need to demonstrate that you are running a business ... so if your license is being used toward that end, you need to keep track of your expenses and bring them to your accountant, who will help you determine where any write-offs would come from.

In fairness, he didn't make a big deal of it, so I do think it was just part of his overall pitch to try to demonstrate that we could make even more by going for his proposal.
