I have compassion for those falling on hard times, but this sounds like a pattern of poor decisions led them to this point.

Once his stuff is out, I'm cutting his responsibility for rent..... the guy is dying....he's not bailing because he broke up with his girlfriend....have some compassion....If I cant get it rented for a month or 2.....and there is near ZERO reason I shouldn't be able to if I have a clue..... then I'll eat the lost $$ and sleep easy at night....my karma and my conscience will be clear.

Most of these folks have nothing to lose and are afraid of nothing, so there's very little moral compass involved..  

There's the side that says "it's a business and needs to be treated as such" and the side that says "it's a business, but there's room for compassion."

The reason we say we are upset is very often not really the reason, but it takes compassion, communication and patience to break down those walls and open up. 

Having compassion for people is an attribute not a hinderance.
