The slab underneath the carpeting was crumbling in some areas the dogs especially preferred.

I'm not sure moving plumbing is really an option because its aligned with the plumbing for the unit underneath. 

There are original hardwood floors underneath the nasty carpet but I think they may be too far gone to be salvaged.Unfortunately I've decided that I have to gut the bathroom.

These are expensive to work on and requires the landlord to pay for the heating of the water.A lot of the soil there is unstable and you see foundation problems at many apartment buildings. 

I do this for a living, and while I *always* use thinset underneath I've actually seen the majority of the guys don't.
